{"id":10107,"date":"2021-03-02T20:40:29","date_gmt":"2021-03-02T20:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drmichellruiz.com\/?p=10107"},"modified":"2021-03-02T21:24:44","modified_gmt":"2021-03-02T21:24:44","slug":"sprained-ankle-the-first-24h","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drmichellruiz.com\/en\/sprained-ankle-the-first-24h","title":{"rendered":"SPRAINED ANKLE: The first 24 to 72 hours"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Ankle sprains are very common injuries, they occur when the ligaments that support the ankle go beyond their normal range of motion and become stretched or torn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>What you do in the first few hours and days after a sprain can help you lessen the pain and heal more quickly.<\/strong><\/p><p><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Symptoms of a Sprain <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#000000\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd18\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/td3\/2\/16\/1f518.png\"> Sudden, sharp pain that forces you to immediately stop moving or take weight off the ankle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd18\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/td3\/2\/16\/1f518.png\"> Pain that&#8217;s located on the spot of the injured ligament (for example, on the inside of your ankle).<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd18\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/td3\/2\/16\/1f518.png\"> Swelling or bruising at the site of the sprain.<br><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd18\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/td3\/2\/16\/1f518.png\"> Limited or no ability to move the ankle a certain way or stand on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">The first 24 to 72 hours <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you suspect you may have sprained your ankle (see \ud835\udc12\ud835\udc32\ud835\udc26\ud835\udc29\ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc28\ud835\udc26\ud835\udc2c), follow the treatment protocol of R.I.C.E: rest, ice, compression, and elevation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#005aa3\"><strong>REST<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#000000\">Avoid activities that actively cause pain in your ankle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#005aa3\"><strong>ICE<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#000000\">Treating a sprain with ice can reduce pain and swelling. When you ice your ankle, make sure you use a cloth barrier between the ice and your skin and limit icing session to 10 to 15 minutes every 1 to 2 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#005aa3\"><strong>COMPRESSION<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">An elastic bandage can bring down swelling and stabilize the joint. Wrap it snugly, but not so tight that it causes numbness or tingling. And remove or significantly loosen it when you go to bed at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#005aa3\"><strong>ELEVATION<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">By keeping your ankle elevated above the level of your heart, you can help reduce swelling and pain.
